Predictive Analytics

Using data and models to forecast future outcomes and inform decisions.

Definition

Predictive analytics is the practice of using historical data, statistical models, and machine learning to forecast future outcomes — demand, churn, failure, risk — and to inform decisions before the cost or opportunity is locked in. It turns descriptive reporting into forward-looking action.

Context

Predictive analytics earns its keep when forecasts are wired into real decisions: staffing to predicted demand, intervening on at-risk customers, scheduling maintenance before failure. The value is not the prediction itself but the operating move it enables. Weak predictive-analytics programs produce dashboards; strong ones change what the business does this week.
